Opportunities to maximize the utilization of marginal landfill gas are available on every beneficial use project. The challenge is to identify these opportunities and then to configure the energy need to the available landfill gas. Quality of the gas provided will continue to represent the greatest impediment to adapting these opportunities to use landfill gas, but depending on the primary beneficial use implemented, gas quality could easily be rendered a non issue. Given the fact that all of the opportunities were originally designed for traditional gas fueling, the possibility exists to match landfill gas availability with the fueling requirements for a number of energy demands. The bottom line is that there are opportunities to maximize the energy utilization potential of the landfill gas in a beneficial manner, rather than having to send the excess gas to a flare where the energy potential is wasted.
