Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) is a vague and complex concept. There is no yardstick to clearly measure it. Forest certification is an instrument used to measure SFM considering three pillars: Production, Ecological and Social Sustainability. Sustainable Natural Production Forest Management (SNPFM) is a certification system applied in Indonesia, using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to support decision-making process. AHP has been criticised amongs other things by its compensatory approach using linear additive utility model to integrate crisp values. The aim of this research is to explore different aggregation methods as alternatives to assess the SFM. The Fuzzy AHP and the Rule Base are explored to overcome the inability of the AHP in proper handling of the linguistic variables. The data of real certification for Labanan Forest Management Unit (FMU), East Kalimantan Province, Indonesia is used to assess SFM using three different methods. The Rule Base method, which relies on experts' knowledge and experience, give more meaningful insight and more transparent way in assessment, than both the Normal AHP and the Fuzzy AHP.
