MODIS and AVHRR Sensors are key instruments aboard Terra (EOS AM), Aqua (EOS PM) and NOAA satellites, respectively for measuring comprehensively the state of Earth's environment and ongoing changes in its climate system. In Geoinformatics Center, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), The NOAA AVHRR receiving station was established and started operating on Oct 15, 1997. Data received by NOAA AVHRR receiving station are archived at Geoinformatics Center, and Institute of Industrial Science, Tokyo University, concurrently for research collaboration among the users and researchers in the region. The receiving system was upgraded to receive data from new generation of Earth Observation system (EOS) satellites, which have better sensors. Terra MODIS ground receiving system was installed on May 21, 2001 to receive MODIS data, which has more spectral bands and better resolution than NOAA AVHRR. Lately, The system was upgraded to receive MODIS data from Aqua on June 19, 2003. IIS, GISTDA (Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency of Thailand), and AIT have formed a team for MODIS data utilization. The data is sent from AIT to IIS and GISTDA. GISTDA distributes data to Thai and ASEAN users. The receiving stations in AIT provides the possibility to conduct research activity regarding satellite data processing, near-real data distribution and applications in various fields such as global environment, forestry, agriculture, fisheries, oceanography, disasters and etc. This paper describes AIT data receiving and processing system, archiving system, data distribution, collaborations and on going data usage activities.
