MANGROVE CHANGE AFTER TSUNAMI IN PHANG-NGA,THAILAND

In Thailand, mangrove forest areas have been critically deteriorated. Following the tsunami in Asia on 26 December 2004, mangrove forest the affected in 6 provinces along the Coast of Andaman Sea has been damaged. Phang Nga province is one of the most severely effected due to its physical characteristics of coast and seabed that caused the highest run up height and inundation length in Thailand. Visual interpretation technique was applied to monitor mangrove change by high resolution images of pan-sharpening SPOT-5 with 2.5 meter resolution. The false color composite (FCC) image was derived using NIR (0.78-0.89 μm.) band in red, SWIR (1.58 - 1.75 μm.) band in green and Red (0.61 - 0.68 μm.) band in blue to distinguish between mangrove forest and other land cover. The results indicated that the mangrove forest areas after tsunami have decreased. In addition, the work study includes the study on beach forest change and shoreline rehabilitation.
