Advancing Aerodynamic Wing Design with Ultra-Efficient Wound Composite Truss Structures

This talk will discuss recent advances in the development of Wrapped Tow Reinforced (WrapToR) truss structures, andthe promise they hold for the development of unconventional, aerodynamically efficient wing designs and novel aircraftconfigurations. The development and advantages of the concept will be discussed, including its ideal combination of high performance composite materials, highly efficient truss geometry, and a low cost continuous winding process.Experimental results for the mechanical properties of WrapToR truss beams will be shown and compared to existing composite structures. Potential applications of these high-performance structures to unconventional wing and fuselage configurations will be highlighted, including very high aspect ratio, joined, non-planar and braced wing geometries, and blended wing body, hybrid wing body, and double-bubble fuselage configurations.
