1.Wingtip vortices pose a routine hazard to aircraft, especially during landing and take-off, the intensity or strength of the vortex being a function of aircraft size, speed, and configuration (flap setting, etc.).2. The strongest vortices are produced by heavy aircraft. Large jet aircraft can generate vortices that can persist for many minutes, drifting with the wind, posing threats to smaller aircraft and necessitating careful air traffic control planning, and the issuing of wake turbulence warnings to pilots.3. The application of winglets are shown to reduce drag, but evidence shows that winglets do not reduce vortices and often result in additional wing stress and hence additional wing mass.
