The Design, Construction, and Commissioning of the New 2100 TPH Arch Coal Cardinal Preparation Plant

The Cardinal Preparation Plant which was designed to process coal from the Mountain Laurel longwall mine has now been successfully commissioned. The plant has run in excess of design capacity The PLC programming has allowed automated module start-up with seamless transitions from single, double and triple module operation. Preliminary circuit efficiency testing shows anticipated high levels of performanceThe authors are indebted to the senior management of Arch Coal, Inc. and the Mingo Logan Division for their confidence and support in the design, construction and commissioning of the plant.The successful start-up of the plant is a reflection on the teamwork and melding of disparate skill sets from Arch Coal, the new operating crews at the plant and the plant contractor Industrial Resources.In particular, the authors would like to thank Steve Leer (C.E.O.
