Arch Coal leases a major block of high quality bituminous coal predominantly in the Alma and Lower Cedar Grove Seams in the vicinity of the town of Sharpies in Logan County, West Virginia. The property is called Mountain Laurel. No existing mine or processing facilities were present at this site in 2003. A detailed feasibility study during 2003 indicated that the coal could be mined, processed and sold providing an adequate rate of return to justify the anticipated capital outlay. (+ 250 million U.S. dollars).
