MULTISTAGE HEAVY MEDIUM SEPARATION -DISCARDS AND LOW QUALITY ROM WASHING

In recent years coal prices grew to all time highs and frequent energy shortages are experienced in a fast growing South African economy. New mines require years before becoming productive. A cheap and immediately available source of power plant coal is in most coal mines backyard: discards stockpiles. The Tri-Flo~(TM), a multistage Heavy Medium (HM) separator, has high sink capacity and produces three products in one vessel simplifying plant layout and reducing costs at high efficiency. A plant was built to wash low quality ROM or to re-wash discards from existing plants. The results and many aspects encountered during the development of the Tri-Flo~(TM) project are presented.
