This paper is a case history of the foundation analyses performed for the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The bridge towers are supported by concrete cellular caissons that were constructed overwater by casting concrete in lifts to the mudline and then excavating through cells to achieve penetration into the mudline. Geotechnical analyses, including finite-difference computer modeling and pseudo-static seismic analyses, were performed to evaluate the caisson sinking process and axial and lateral capacities. These types of analyses were also performed to evaluate the anchorages located along the crests of existing steep soil slopes.
