Stacks and composite luminescent concentrators have been fabricated and characterised. In the case of a stack concentrator doped with yellow and red Coumarin dyes, excellent agreement with a thermodynamic model is obtained for the luminescence and concentration ratio of the device. Stack concentrators manage the available energy more effectively, however reflection losses at slab interface necessitate careful matching of layers to the incident spectrum. Composite slabs in different orientations were investigated and an increase in output was observed with the clear plexit 55 layer first. Model simulations of large area homogeneously doped slabs show that concentration ratio increases with size despite the increase in background and re-absorption losses.
