For the design of irrigation system the water need of the crop during a day and over the season based on the storage characteristics of the soil is the key parameter. These needs define the water flow required. With a photovoltaic driven pumping system another parameter is introduced, which cannot be influenced - the solar irradiance. Especially, if no battery or water storage tank are used, the adaptation of the water supply, depending on the solar irradiance and the water demand, defined by the crop and soil, is a tedious and complicate matter for the designer of irrigation and photovoltaic pumping system (PVPS). Particularly the challenge lies in the water distribution management. The available water has to be distributed in a way and over time to meet the total crop requirements.
