We failed to replicate the pavilion in its original geometry and details. However, what stands reflects the demands of current engineering codes as well as our best effort to create a substantial and climate-worthy replacement for a classic structure. The exposed bolts, the visible narrow edges of the steel connectors, and the exposed timber frame all recreate the informality of the original structure. We accomplished this through extensive use of off-the-shelf connectors wherever finishes would eventually conceal them and by combining designs for new connectors with the load transfer capabilities of shear plates. Based upon the requirement that this structure meet the demands of current codes, and limited by the geometry of the existing structure, we combined a twentiethcentury technology to our twenty-first-century design for the recreation of a nineteenthcentury building.
