Service Lifts in Wind Turbines: 'Which Safety Rules are Applicable?'

As an alternative for fossil fuels, wind turbines are used. For safe access special service lifts can be used. These lifts are for the purpose of maintenance and inspection, due to this special use the machine directive (2006/42/EC) is applicable. Due to diversity of safety levels a Recommendation for Use is drawn up by Notified Bodies. This RFU CNB/M/09.318 prescribes precautions how to deal with the hazards. For example protection devices on top and underneath the carrier, demands on landing doors and the carrier. In general the service lift is driven by a traction hoist, suspended by 2 ropes, guided by ropes and has a carrier for normally 2 persons. The stakeholders have requested for a harmonised standard. This is accepted by the European commission and a mandate is given to CEN. At this moment a working group within CEN is formed to develop a standard. This will be the EN 81-44.
