Implementation of Counterweight Adjustment to Achieve Energy Savings

In Helsinki, during the Elevcon 2006, an article was presented on a research project funded by the Hong Kong Housing Authority and carried out by personnel from three organizations, namely Housing Authority, Kone Elevator (HK) Ltd. and City University of Hong Kong. The project was on a series of explorations to achieve energy savings with lifts and escalators, one of which was the adjustment of counterweight based on the traffic pattern of a lift system. A unit for comparing energy consumptions of different lift systems was developed while the project confirmed positive savings by the developed method. This article presents a real implementation on a hotel project in Hong Kong while a server based software service has been developed to continuously trace the traffic patterns of a group of lifts. This hotel may be considered the greenest hotel in Hong Kong, being awarded high profiles in environmental assessment.
