The Hong Kong Housing Authority owns and manages around 5,000 units of lifts and escalators in Hong Kong. A small reduction in the energy consumption of each unit could mean very substantial saving in the electricity bill for such a large portfolio. The study elucidated in this paper attempts to explore the energy saving potential of various means for improving the operational efficiency of these units. A benchmarking parameter has also been devised for comparing the energy consumption of different lifts under different loading and traffic conditions. This parameter, expressed in J/kg/m, effectively correlates the energy input with the passenger load and distance traveled.
