Over the last decades a constant progress has taken place in the rail transportation sector. Growing requirements resulting from a constant development of rail transportation are specifically connected with an increase in train speed and the application of greater axle loads due to an increase in the weight of the carried goods. According to the market requirements, rail producers tend to increase the rail grades strength in order to develop high performances rails especially concerning the wear resistance properties. On this basis the innovative Danieli RH~2 – Rail Head Hardening process has been specifically designed and developed to enhance the mechanical properties of rails increasing their performance in service. Danieli has supplied an RH~2 system to Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant's (CMP) for the production of 100 meters long head hardened rails meeting the customer requirements. The process has been developed through an intense R&D activity performing several tests to validate the theoretical models and to optimize the process parameters. Accurate measurements of metallurgical and mechanical properties have been done on the treated rails from the laboratory trials up to the industrial production. Results show the high capability of RH~2 system to comply with the most demanding technical standards worldwide.
