Different biological materials of marine origin, including structural biopolymers isolated from deep-sea sponges and corals, have been investigated for their mechanical, biochemical (HPLC, PAAG-electrophoresis, MS) and structural (SEM, TEM, AFM, LSM, XRD, FTIR, Raman) properties. For the first time nanostructured chitin as a component of the skeletal fibers of marine horn sponges (Verongida: Porifera) was isolated. Proteinous material (collagen I) in the form of nanofibrils was isolated from silica-based basal spicules of marine glass sponge Hyalonema sieboldi. Pigments inside Isididae octocorals were determined as being quinone-tanned protein.
