For the demand of current strong fuel economy movement, low viscosity engine oil has been widely used. For passenger cars, 0W-20 becomes major part especially in Japan and further low viscosity formulation has been studied and installed for the latest cars. Authors have studied ultra-low viscosity engine oil and found the merit of fuel economy with suitable friction modifier technology. However, it was also realized that engine detergency was deteriorated due to increase of oil consumption as oil mist in blow-by gas. In this background, the effect of oil formulation on oil mist property was investigated by the mist collector newly developed. Through the test results, it was understood that high weight molecule additive contributes to mist reduction. Based on this technology, the ultra-low viscosity engine oil developed successfully reduced oil consumption and achieved better engine detergency than commercial 0W-20 in the engine detergency test.
