Humic Substances and their Analogs for Electrochemical Stimulation of Microbial Perchlorate Reduction

Microbial perchlorate reduction has been identified as the most practical and feasible means of attenuating this important contaminant from industrial and military wastestreams. Our previous studies demonstrated that dissimilatory perchlorate-reducing bacteria (DPRB) are ubiquitous in the environment, that their activity is dependent on the presence of molybdate, and is negatively regulated by oxygen and nitrate. These organisms are metabolically diverse and readily stimulated by a broad range of organic electron donors (1). However, the continuous addition of these compounds for in-line treatment can be expensive and create conditions conducive to the outgrowth of other non-perchlorate-reducing organisms resulting in biofouling, poor water quality, and treatment failure.
