Production of organic residues has increased in recent years. Composting is considered to stabilise organic residues involving partial humification of the organic matter. Soil application of organic wastes and residues of any nature requires, however, that these materials be subjected to appropriate treatments. In fact, the addition of fresh or immature organic material to soil is followed by a rapid decomposition. This can cause high CO2 concentrations, and low O2 levels, which can lead to O2 deficiency in the rhizosphere, and therefore to anaerobic and reducing conditions in the soil. Strong microbial activity could also promote the degradation of indigenous soil organic matter. Another problem is that inorganic N can be immobilised through its incorporation into microbial tissues, being temporarily unavailable to plants.
