The interactions of humic substances with cations exert a powerful chemical influence on the environment; for example, in ecosystem buffering. Interactions involve both dissolved and particulate humic substances. Broadly speaking, fulvic acid accounts for a major part of the dissolved organic matter in natural waters, while humic acid and humin occur mostly in soils and sediments as part of the solid phase.
