The Asia-Pacific area comprises several automotive markets with very different technical requirements. Some markets are poised to introduce Euro V type legislation, which requires advanced engines and Fuel Injection Equipment (FIE), whilst others still have Euro I-type legislation and are in the process of introducing more stringent emissions regulations. This means that the fuel quality, which usually matches the level of emissions required, can vary. One example is the sulfur level, where in some market areas it can be 1,000 ppm or higher, whilst in other markets it is already below 10 ppm. The same applies to the use of bio-components. In some markets it is mandatory to have a specific percentage of bio-component in fuel, others have resisted such legislation. As a consequence, the Asia-Pacific market place is far more complex than what is seen in other geographical areas. This is a challenge for the fuel manufacturer as well as the additive manufacturer, who needs to provide solutions to satisfy varying requirements, but at the same time ensuring that any application that is employed is harm free in the field. For example, in areas where fuel sulfur level is higher than 500 ppm or bio-components are used, it is not necessary to have the diesel fuel treated with lubricity additives. Another example is the use of bio-components that can require more advanced cold flow additives and increased oxidation protection.
