Diversity of Cryptosporidium spp. in Mammals and Humans in Poland

One hundred sixty six samples were collected from wildlife (protected species: 22 of European beaver Castor fiber, 55 of European bison Bison bonasus, 5 of Polish horse Equus gmelini and 14 of European wolf Canis lupus; game species: 52 of red deer Cervus elaphus, 23 of roe deer Capreolus capreolus and 5 of boar Sus scrofa). Additionally, a group of samples from captive animals was studied: 30 of beaver, 66 of red deer and 5 of Polish horse. Fifty seven human samples were obtained from 26 clinical cases of children and adults from the Children's Hospital in Otwock, Poland, Children's Memorial Health Institute and Cancer Centre in Warsaw, Poland. Cryptosporidium positive samples were identified in 5 of 7 studied animal species (prevalence rates from 9% in roe deer to 36% in wolves) and nested PCR-sequencing analysis revealed that the genotype involved was C. parvum genotype 2 (C). Among 12 positive human isolates, three different Cryptosporidium species were identified: 10 C. parvum, 1 C. hominis and 1 C. meleagridis.
