A seroepidemiological study of toxoplasmosis in pregnant women in Ardabil, Iran, Using ECLIA technique

Toxoplasmosis is a widespread zoonosis caused by toxoplasma gondii, an obligate intracellular parasite. Toxoplasmosis acquired in the first trimester of pregnancy commonly leads to stillbirth or severe fetal malformations and symptoms such as retinochoroiditis, hydrocephalus or microcephalus, and cerebral calcification (congenital toxoplasmosis). In this descriptive study, using Electro Chemi luminescence Immuno Assay 544 serum samples of pregnant women were detected in Farabi laboratory (Ardabil, Iran) (in 2009). In 256 cases (47%) the concentrations of Anti-Toxo IgG were higher than 30 IU/ml (positive). In other 287 cases (52.8%) the concentrations of Anti-Toxo IgG were between 1 IU/ml and <30 IU/ml, which are considered indeterminate, and only in 25 cases of all 544 studied samples (4.6%) the levels of Anti-Toxo IgM were higher than 1 COI .
