SMARTEXEC~R Mine ventilation on demand system at the Xstrata Nickel Rim South Mine, Sudbury, Ontario; implementation and results to date (February 2012)

Simsmart's SmartEXEC (Smart Expandable Energy Control) has been commissioned to provide Ventilation on Demand (VOD) for Nickel Rim South in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Since implementation, the system has been incrementally delivering the much anticipated benefits of increased energy efficiency while maintaining the mine's excellent production performance. This paper will report on the current status of SmartEXEC at the Xstrata, Nickel Rim South (NRS) mine. In particular, discussion will include: How the SmartEXEC system has helped the mines meet energy management objectives. How SmartEXEC controls air flow as a function of scheduled activity and/or personnel and machinery presence to optimize use of available ventilation. How SmartEXEC commissioning has followed a layered implementation design and deployment based on infrastructure availability and a change management plan. How the SmartEXEC system is being integrated into the mine operating strategy.
