Ventilation System Design for Vale Inco's Totten Mine

Vale Inco's Totten Mine operated on a limited basis in the 1960's and had its operation suspended in 1972 in response to low metal prices and a rationalization of Ontario Division operations. A series of diamond drill programs were subsequently completed and feasibility studies resulted in the decision to re-open the mine. The expected mine life is 19 years. This paper will outline the process used in completing a ventilation system design for the mine. Details will explain the requirements to formulate an accurate numerical model of the mine from proposed mining plans, the process of economic airway size selection to maximize efficiency and the process of determining main fan duty requirements.
