Air-crossings are the major shock loss sources in mine ventilation networks. It is, however, an essential component of a ventilation network. Therefore, well planned and well designed air-crossings can minimize the amount of shock losses that are inevitable due to the characteristic shape of air-crossing configurations, which in turn can reduce the cost of ventilation. In this study, shock losses are analyzed at the air-crossings using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. Several air-crossing configurations were analyzed to study the influence of shape on shock losses. Results of this research will be helpful in designing effective air-crossings which would reduce the ventilation cost.
