Understanding of the interfacial phenomenon during refractory/metal reactions is vital to develop a high performance refractory, which is critical for the sustainable development of any metal processing industry. Therefore, fundamental phenomena affecting the interface evolution and wetting behavior during monolithic refractory and white metals reactions are reviewed with a special focus on the behavior of high alumina monolithic in the presence of a range of non-wetting additives. Dynamic wetting of high alumina monolithic by molten aluminium alloy was characterized by using sessile drop method as a function of the refractory composition. The influence of mixing the non-wetting agents on the modification of the wetting characteristics of high alumina monolithic is also presented. The interface chemistry was analyzed by using SEM/XRD. Potential implications of the introduction of the non-wetting agents in improving the refractory resistance against aluminium attack are also discussed.
