A technique for measuring the remaining thickness of tuyeres by the TDR method was developed. Experiments were carried out in the laboratory and with test and commercial converters. The results of the laboratory experiments were as follows. 1) Because MgO displays excellent performance as an insulator, the measurement error at normal temperature obtained by calculation from the relative value with the relay point pulse can be held to approximately σ = 1mm. 2) Reproducibility of the measured length can be obtained up to 1623K, and even at 1673K, differences are no more than 10mm. However, at 1723K, the difference exceeds 20mm. 3) In immersion experiments in molten iron and molten slag, good agreement between the actual measured values and measured values obtained with the sensor could be observed. Based on the above results, measurements of the remaining thickness of converter tuyeres were performed using the newly-developed sensor with the following results. 1) The remaining thickness of tuyeres in a 5t test converter and in a 180t commercial converter was measured experimentally, and good agreement was obtained between the actual measured values and measured values obtained with the sensor. 2) In measurements with the 180t converter over approximately 40 days, the difference between the actual measured values and measured values with the sensor was within ± 10mm.
