B{sub}2O{sub}3 is known to encourage low temperature reaction between MgO and Al{sub}2O{sub}3 to form in situ magnesium aluminate spinel in refractories matrix systems. XRD indicates that B{sub}2O{sub}3 mineralizes spinel formation at 1100°C. However, the spinel content does not increase with increased B{sub}2O{sub}3 content. B MAS-NMR and XRD indicate that the mineralizing mechanism involves a boron containing glassy phase. This paper discusses the effect of different levels of B{sub}2O{sub}3 addition on spinel formation.
