Pressurised Liquid Extraction (PLE), a recently developed extraction technique is suitable for isolation of biologically active constituents from Medicinal plants. PLE works according to the principle of static extraction with superheated liquids which enhance diffusivities of solvent leads to increase in extraction speed and efficiency by using less solvent. This process may substitute for conventional solvent extraction and supercritical extraction Therefore attempts have been made to carry out the comparative studies to evaluate PLE as an alternative to solvent extraction with regards to extraction time, solvent consumption, and extraction yield for extraction of Indian medicinal plant Chlorophytum borivilianum (Liliaceae) is used as a natural aphrodisiac and revitaliser in Indian system of medicines and nowadays popular as "Herbal Viagra", The saponins are responsible for the medicinal value of plant. The present study highlights the extraction of saponins from C. borivilianum tubers by pressurised liquid extraction (PLE) and Soxhlet extraction by using methanol and ethanol The experimental results are reported for optimization of saponin rich extract by varying the process parameters like pressure, temperature, extraction time and particle size,. The yields of extracts are 8,12% (w/w) and 7 25% (w/w) in pressurised methanol and ethanol respectively. The time of extraction is 15 min at 100 bar pressure at 70°C for MeOH and 80°C for EtOH The Soxhlet extraction of same particle size (30 mesh) was carried out for 8 hours. The yields are 6.43% (w/w) and 1 94% (w/w) in methanol and ethanol respectively. The components are fractionated by column chromatography and quantified by HPTLC.
