When modeling complex phenomena, simplifications and idealizations are indispensable. When analyzing the resulting abstract models, approximations of their mathematical constituents are, as a rule, also needed. The main aim of this brief note is to clarify relations between the classic approach to set approximations and recent proposals appearing hi the literature on rough sets. In particular, relations between the standard topological concepts and basic concepts of rough set theory will be explained.
