Two dimensional predictions have been made of temperature profiles of the arc, electrode and work-piece for stationary TIG arcs in a unified treatment. Increases in weld depth of over a factor of two are predicted for different surface tension properties of the weld pool or if an insulating layer exists on the weld pool. The calculations indicate possible explanations of weld depth variability in practical welding and also possible explanations for the increase in weld depths obtained in TIG welding activated by a flux (ATIG).
