This paper presents results of a numerical study on the effectiveness of proposed engineering measures, such as rock pavements on the river bed, to maintain the water stage in the alluvial channels downstream of the Three Gorges Dam. The numerical model was validated using field observations, and predictions of water level changes under various engineering schemes are presented to illustrate the most effective layout for maximum water level rise at the Yichang Station near the Gezhouba Dam, where navigation depth at the shiplocks will be a major concern in the near future.
