Substitution of pulverized coal injection by solid biocarbon injection has the potential to achieve substantial reduction in GHG emissions from blast furnace ironmaking. A techno-economic model was developed to evaluate the value-in-use of solid biocarbon to facilitate the selection of solid biocarbon for replacement of pulverized coal injection. The value-in-use of solid biocarbon is strongly influenced by its O/C mass ratio as it dictates the cost of raw materials required to support the blast furnace ironmaking process and potential GHG emissions achievable. The chemical composition of solid biocarbon is determined by the thermal conversion technology and conditions employed in its production. The main goal of this study is to assist solid biocarbon producers develop products that meet the technical needs of the steel industry.
