Research studies indicate that active constrained layer damping (ACLD) treatment of a structure is more effective, compact and reliable than the corresponding passive constrained layer damping (PCLD) for attenuating the vibration from various structural systems. For PCLD treatments recommendation for extent and placement of the treatment are available for common structures. However for ACLD, no such guidelines are available. Present work addresses this question. The extent of vibration control of beam with variable coverage of ACLD is analyzed. Modelling of the partially covered beam which consists of a viscoelastic material, sandwiched between base and piezoelectric layer has been done with finite element method. Complex shear modulus methods have been used to model the viscoelastic layer. By using the proportional and derivative control, the effect of ACLD on vibration suppression performance is investigated.
