This work discusses the design strategy of multi-agent system (MAS) for large engineering structures health monitoring. In the paper, the requirements of system for large structural health monitoring (SHM) are presented,and as a very important step, ontology design is introduced. The design of individual agents and their functions are elaborated on according to the defined different layers for SHM. Then the whole MAS architecture is presented. At last, a case study for a practical composite plate structure is researched to evaluate the efficiency and advantages of proposed MAS for large structural damage detection. Through some important work such as ontology design, distributed realization, facilitator design, the four key characteristics of agents, autonomy,social ability, reactivity, and pro-activeness, can be exhibited better than the past work. The framework is more typical and flexible, which is easy to be referenced by other researchers to develop their own multi-agent based SHM system.
