New Zealand pastoral technology in China: what relevance if any

In the context of the present increase in scientific exchange between New Zealand and China, the more general question of transfer of pastoral systems technology between countries is discussed. Pastoral systems evolve within a specific social and climatic context and usually are not easily transferred in total. However, system principles, after appropriate research and adaptation, may be transferable. Principles that have contributed to major pastoral systems advances in New Zealand include (ⅰ) changes in practice that better align seasonal herbage growth with seasonal animal demand, (ⅱ) changes in practice that increase utilisation by animals of grass grown, and (ⅲ) improvement of feed quality. Possible application of these principles in China is briefly explored.
