The dry matter and nitrogen yield of two species mixtures with L. chinensis and five legumes (A. adsur-gens, L. daurica, M. ruthenica, Msativa and V. amoena) were measured to evaluate suitable combinations in semi - arid areas. Mixtures were established according to a replacement series in 2004 and were harvested twice a year. All the mixtures had similar DM yields with mono -grass in the second year, but nitrogen yields were significantly higher than that of mono-grass. L. chinensis had strong competitive ability when mixed with L. daurica, M. ruthenica, and V. amoena, but weak competitive ability with A. adsurgens and M. sativa.
