Toward restoration and sustainable use of grassland in Horqin sandy land-15 years of Japan-China collaborative studies

The National Institute for Agro-Environmental Sciences has been involved in joint research cooperation with the Cold and Arid Regions Environment and Engineering Institute for more than 10 years, and Inner Mongolia University for three years. The research targets ranged from those concerning mechanisms based on field surveys, to land use planning using remote sensing. Field investigations such as a grazing experiment and a field survey were the main parts of our research to clarify the process of desertification and to estimate carrying capacity. We also focused on the evaluation of desertification control measures. The results of these surveys were combined with remote sensing techniques to estimate land conditions and productivity on a regional scale. The results of these works will be integrated for the development of indicators to evaluate land resources and the establishment of sustainable land use planning, which is the ultimate goal of our research.
