STABILITY ANALYSIS FOR PROMISING SUGARCANE CULTIVARS IN NORTH INDIA

Aims. The present investigation was undertaken to identify stable and suitable cultivars across different environmental conditions in which they are planted. Methods & Results: Twelve promising cultivars of sugarcane (a complex interspecific hybrid ofSacchnrum spp.) grown in nine environments (autumn 1996-98, 1997-99, 1998-2000; spring 1997-98, 1998-99, 1999-2000 planted crop and ratoon of spring 1998-99, 1999-2000, 2000-2001) at Sugarcane Research Institute Farm, Shahjahanpur, were studied for genotype x environment (G x E) interaction and evaluated for phenotypic stability by measuring regression coefficients (bi) and mean square deviations from regression (S~2d). cultivars means for number of millable canes (NMC), cane yield, and sucrose percentin juice during November & January indicated outstanding performance of CoS 95255, an early maturing and CoSe 92423, a mid maturing cultivar. Pooled analysis of variance revealed significant differences for genotypes (G), environment (E), and G x E interactions. Significant environment, linear and G x E (linear) interaction was also observed for all traits under study. Significance of Study: The stability analyses indicated that for NMC, cane yield, sucrose per cent in juice during November and January, CoS 95255 and CoSe 92423 performed better than rest of the cultivars studied due to having high mean value of both the cultivars over all the nine environments with regression near to unity and least mean square deviation from regression (S~2d).
