For years, battery storage was mostly a topic discussed for energy generation in areas without a reliable public electricity grid. However, over the past decade renewable energy sources have continuously gained market share and battery storage has obtained relevance even in countries with a good public grid. Without storage, fluctuating energy input to the grid resulting from renewable energy sources must be balanced using conventional power plants. As feed-in-tariffs decrease and incentives for self-consumption come into play, a market for photovoltaic systems with integrated battery storage will gradually develop. To implement this concept, reliable, efficient, safe and cost-effective battery technology is necessary. Since its market introduction, Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery technology has seen significant continuous improvement in power and energy density, cycle life, and temperature resistance while demonstrating exceptional performance, safety, reliability and cost effectiveness in demanding consumer and hybrid electric vehicle applications. All of these features will be important for utility storage applications.
