As a first step in simulating NOx formation under the oxygen-starved conditions in the first stage of a municipal solid waste (MSW) combustor, pyrolysis experiments were performed by heating soy flour to 700°C in a stainless steel reactor while flushing the reactor with argon gas. The C products HCN, NH3 and NOx were quantified in order to determine the fate of nitrogen in the fuel. The following distribution of fuel-N was found in the experiments after pyrolysis: 1.8% as NO, 1.8% as HCN, 29% as NH3, 22% as tar, 22% as char and 23% unknown. The unknown , nitrogen is probably in the form of N2. The NH3 production rate observed here is higher than for the pyrolysis of coal, suggesting that coal combustion mechanisms may not be appropriate for MSW.
