A carbon footprint for an organization is a measure of the impact that the organization’s activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide. Common sources of carbon footprints in organizations are results from the direct use of fuel and from indirect emissions such as employee travel. When calculating an organization’s footprint it is important to quantify as full a range of emission sources as possible to provide a complete picture of the organization’s impact. This paper provides an assessment framework and case study to estimate the overall carbon footprint of an organization’s complete supply chain and pinpoint areas for improvement. The seven step process, including the mathematical analysis and conversion, is provided with the aid of a manufacturing case study from the United Kingdom.
