Three-dimensional Structural Modelling in the Swiss-French Jura Mountains

The Jura Mountains represent the external domain of the north-western Alps. Thrusted folds, related to a basal detachment surface at the base of the Triassic, are the main structures in the region. The derived outcropping structures define a clear ENE-WSW oriented anticline-syncline pattern, locally intersected by high angle fault swarms roughly perpendicular to the main fold trends. A petroleum system has been identified in the area comprising Triassic Bunter sands that are sealed by overlying evaporates, and sourced by Permo-Carboniferous shales and coals. This play has been proven by the La Chandeliere oil discovery whereas important seeps can be recognised at surface. Celtique Energie has undertaken a review of the available data in its permits in the region to validate the possible hydrocarbon plays below the Triassic salt unit. The final 2-D/3-D model resulted in a new interpretation of the studied Jura domain whereby thin-thick compression tectonism is proposed to have deformed both the pre and post salt sediments so that some possible anticlinal traps of significant size (up to 90 KM2) below the Triassic salt, will probably be targets for future exploration in the area.
