Accurate acoustic measurements performed while drilling present additional challenges as compared to wireline. In the logging-while-drilling (LWD) environment, the drilling operation will often adversely affect the quality of acoustic measurements in a number of ways, including substantial background noise during drilling caused by drilling dynamics and mud circulation.Also, the dynamic motion and fluctuating centralization of the transmitter and receivers dramatically reduce the homogeneity of acquired signals.
