This paper presents innovative concepts and methods, including fastening systems such as rivetless nut plates and threaded inserts, aircraft fittings and hardware such as bulkhead transfer fittings for electrical, fuel and hydraulic lines, and mounting brackets for attaching fuel, hydraulic and electrical systems. These applications are derived from the ForceMate expanded bushing installation method and can be installed in metal or composite structures. They enhance the design fatigue life and durability of the structural assembly as well as considerably reducing manufacturing, assembly and installation time and cost. Since they occupy less space and are generally lighter than legacy fittings and fastener systems, they also potentially reduce weight of the primary structural assembly. The evolution, installation methodology, and advantages of these products that translate into design flexibility, reduced cost of installation and assembly of these systems are described. Examples of where these can be readily adapted to helicopter manufacturing and life cycle cost savings for operators are presented.
