This paper deals with the investigation results of upcoated fibers with 500 mu m OD with regard to their temperature behaviour. All tests are based on graded index 50 mu m core Multimode fibers (fiber type Ala according to IEC 60793-2-10). The purpose of this study was to find out, how different design and material options influence the attenuation of a 500 mu m fiber within a temperature range of -60 deg C to +140 deg C. The results reveal the option to limit the maximum attenuation increase to approximately 0.01dB/km at 1300nm wavelength versus the whole temperature range. Choosing a well adapted upcoating material with a wide Glass Transition Temperature Range or using a thin sliding layer between the original coating and the fiber jacket achieves the desired results.
