Innovative Road Maintenance Treatments - Micropatching with TCM 8000

This paper describes an innovative road maintenance procedure developed by the Saskatchewan Department of Highways and Transportation (SDHT) and applied in treating transverse and depressed transverse cracking, longitudinal centerline cracking, localized rutting, and spot sealing. The procedure consists of preparing modified microsurfacing mixes in SDHT specialized equipment called Transverse Crack Filling Machine (TCM 8000). The TCM 8000 machine consists of a fully automated mixing plant and a detachable screed box hydraulically attached to a bobcat. The paper also discusses the field and lab test results and performance findings. The research methodology applied considers four main elements: 1, Discussion of the road surface conditions and preliminary field and lab tests leading to the development of the new maintenance treatment; 2. TCM 8000 design and construction; 3. Road construction procedures using TCM 8000 and modified microsurfacing mixes; and 4. Discussion of the field results and performance measures.
